Glaucoma is an eye disease that can result in total blindness when unaddressed. The best way to resolve it is with glaucoma surgery, also known as a trabeculectomy. Here are a few tips to ensure the best results for the procedure.

How to Prepare for Glaucoma Surgery

1. Discuss Current Medication With Your Doctor

glaucoma-surgery-cincinnatiYou may not be able to take certain medications before your surgery, so let your doctor know about what you’re prescribed. They may want you to discontinue one or several days before. They may also prescribe eye drops or medications you should take in the days or weeks leading up to the surgery. If you need assistance, you can connect your prescribing physician with them to discuss presurgery medication use.

2. Schedule a Ride

You’ll be fully anesthetized during the procedure and will wake up groggy, so schedule a ride from a friend or family member. Never attempt to drive alone. Glaucoma surgery heavily impacts your eyes, and you won’t be able to see clearly right away. Prepare at home as well. Have a dedicated rest area and someone to help you with personal needs throughout the day.

3. Eat & Drink as Advised

Your eye doctor may or may not want you to eat before glaucoma surgery. Stick to their advised plan. Eating or drinking too much may interfere with your bowels. If you respond negatively to anesthesia, you may also vomit. In some cases, you may also increase the risk of infection. If you’re allowed to eat and drink, stick to water and light foods.
