Here at Liberty Veterinary Hospital, we are committed to providing you the most current protocol and recommendations in veterinary medicine.  With that in mind, we have made a few updates to our present bordetella and fecal testing policies.

Bordetella Vaccination

In canines; the Bordetella vaccine provides immunity against; Bordetella bronchiseptica (a bacterium) that causes tracheobronchitis (Kennel Cough) and parainfluenza (a virus), that causes respiratory infection in dogs, and canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV-2) that causes coughing, fever, and a runny nose. In felines; the Bordetella vaccine protects against Bordetella Bronchiseptica.

In felines; the Bordetella vaccine protects against Bordetella Bronchiseptica. We recommend this vaccine for all felines who live in multi-pet homes, have any exposure to other animals, or visit areas with other animals, such as boarding or grooming facilities.

We recommend all patients with a lifestyle that exposes them to other dogs, be kept up to date on this vaccine. This includes; boarding, grooming, dog parks, doggie day care, and anywhere other dogs are present.

In keeping with the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) guidelines, we are updating our vaccination policy on the Canine Bordetella Vaccine.

Previously, Liberty Vet’s policy required Bordetella vaccination semiannually for dogs and annually for cats. Our new policy for entering our boarding and grooming facilities will be annual Bordetella vaccination for both dogs and cats beginning October 1, 2019.

Fecal Testing

Fecal tests are an essential tool to ensure that your pet and your household are not infected and exposed to intestinal parasites. Most intestinal parasites are microscopic and can’t be seen by the naked eye and can only be seen through a microscope. Many intestinal parasites are zoonotic (can be transmitted to humans) and can cause harm to owners. We want to make sure that both your pet and your family are safe.

According to the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC), adult pets should be tested twice annually, and puppies and kittens 4 times in the first year of life.

Previously, Liberty Vet’s policy required fecal testing annually for dogs and cats. Our new policy for entering our boarding and grooming facilities will be semiannual fecal testing for both dogs and cats beginning October 1, 2019.

Thank you for trusting you family members with us.  We look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,

Liberty Veterinary Hospital
