If you’re about to start building your dream home, there are a few considerations to mull over first. By planning early, you can take the stress out of the small options, so you can enjoy the process—instead of feeling worried for months. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to consider when designing your home before hiring an electrical contractor.

Do:

Add a backup generator to your plans.

Plan for power outages in your future home by researching backup generators and having one installed once the house is nearly complete. Generators keep the electricity on in the event of a blackout to avoid costly problems such as basement flooding due to the sump pump losing power. An electrical contractor can typically install a backup generator quickly and easily.

Plan where the furniture will go.

When you’re looking over the blueprints for your future home, picture where the furniture will go. This will let the electrical contractor know where the sockets should be. If they are placed behind a couch or bookshelf, it becomes more difficult to reach. The best places for outlets are typically directly near where a lamp or other electrical device would go.

Don’t:

Forget about light bulbs.

For a natural look, avoid using anything that’s extremely fluorescent or yellow. In most homes, it’s best to go with something that’s a crisp white. If it’s too bright for specific rooms, you can always have a dimmer installed. To extend the life of your bulbs, consider choosing light-emitting diode bulbs over ones that are incandescent or halogen.

Forget about outdoor lighting.

Lighting outside is just as important as the light on the inside of the home. Include a porch and motion sensor light in both the front and back of your home. The sensors should go near the front and back doors of the house for added protection.
