Perhaps your property needs a fence to keep children and pets safe, or maybe privacy is an issue, and you want to protect your backyard from nosy neighbors. No matter why you require a new one, it’s important to ask the right questions to streamline the project. Here are a few to start with.

What to Ask Your Fencing Contractor

1. Are You Licensed & Insured?

Make sure your contractor is licensed to ensure they follow all county and state regulations. Also, check if the company has liability and workers’ comp insurance to protect your property and your finances in the event of damages and employee injuries. Next, ask for references and how many years the company has served the region. Work with a contractor that provides references quickly and has decades of industry experience.

2. What Warranties Do You Offer?

fencesDetermine if the labor and fencing materials are under warranty. Most materials come with limited warranties, but you should still ask if your selection comes with one. Contractors typically offer a one year warranty on labor, but not all do.

3. Does the Project Require Building Permits?

Ask if the contractor will obtain all the necessary permits and has a deep knowledge of municipality fencing rules. If you are putting a boundary fence up in Washington, for example, you can ask neighbors for a reimbursement because it benefits them. Spite fences, or those installed to upset neighbors, are prohibited.

4. What Fencing Materials Do You Provide?

Learn what materials you can select from, such as vinyl, aluminum, chain-link, ornamental iron, and wooden options. Discuss the best material for your project, such as a chain-link backyard fence to keep your dogs safe or a vinyl privacy fencing to enclose a patio or deck.

5. Will You Remove the Old Fencing?

Find out if fence installation includes removal of old materials and any resulting debris, including disposal of hazardous debris, such as screws and nails. If the fencing contractor does not provide cleanup services, contact a junk hauling company to maintain a safe and attractive property.
