Concrete is a strong and attractive surface that you can trust to remain in excellent condition for years, but only if you practice regular care and maintenance. Even then, the material is not immune to the ravages of weather exposure and other stressors. Here are three common issues that might require the attention of a paving contractor.

Issues That Can Occur on Concrete Surfaces

1. Cracking

Surface cracks are not unusual, even during the early stages after your paving contractor pours the concrete. During the curing period, the material shrinks as water in the mix evaporates. When there’s too much water in the substance, it can make it more vulnerable to cracking. Changes in temperature can also be to blame. Minor cracks may be indiscernible, but larger fissures suggest an underlying problem that should be resolved promptly to prevent it from worsening.

Another common concern is scaling, also known as spalling. This happens when areas of the surface essentially chip away—typically the result of exposure to inclement conditions. Natural freeze-and-thaw cycles, for example, cause the concrete to contract and expand. If the original mix had more water than cement, then it’s more vulnerable to flaking when it’s freezing outside. Another common reason for spalling is minimal curing time, which leaves the surface soft, weak, and susceptible.

3. Discoloring

Your concrete may appear one way when your paving contractor applies it and look completely different after several years. Poor mixing of the substance during application can cause it to take on an unexpectedly colorful tinge. Even insufficient curing can change the color of the concrete, particularly if it hardens successfully in some areas and stays softer in others. Sometimes, contractors can apply solutions to resolve the discoloration and restore its original condition. This usually depends on the underlying cause.
