When amateur painters attempt a painting project, they usually choose the right tools and paints to provide adequate results. Unfortunately, many of them neglect to lay down a layer of primer. Below is an explanation of what primer is and why it's an essential part of the project.

What Is Primer?

Primer is an undercoating that conceals blemishes and helps the top coat of paint adhere to the surface. It is composed largely of synthetic resin and solvent, with some brands featuring polyethylene additive to improve durability. It is often used when painting porous materials—particularly wood and concrete—because it seals the material and prevents moisture intrusion, mold, and rot.

When Is Primer Necessary?

Plastics

Plastics are weather-resistant and aren’t ordinarily porous, so the use of a primer is often optional. However, if you are changing paint colors from dark to light, primer helps cover the old coat of paint and prevents it from bleeding through.

Metals

Some metals require primer, while others do not. For instance, paint does not adhere well to untreated aluminum, so primer is often necessary. Also, painters should apply primer to any metal that’s subject to corrosion, especially if it’s outside.

PainterWood & Concrete

Use primer on wood or concrete at all times—particularly if the materials are exposed to the elements. The undercoating helps protect the surface from the ravages of moisture and weather. Also, some paints need time to cure slowly, and the rapid absorption of paint moisture by the wood or concrete can speed up the process and impede curing.
