When spending time in Hawaii, you’ll have the opportunity to relax on stunning beaches and engage with ocean life like green sea turtles through snorkeling tours. Before heading out on a catamaran boat to discover the wonders of the ocean, here are a few fun facts you should know about Hawaiian green sea turtles.

3 Interesting Facts About Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles

1. They’re Big

On average, adult green sea turtles can grow to be three or four feet long and can weigh up to 400 pounds. The biggest green sea turtle discovered was over five feet long and weighed 871 pounds

2. They’re Herbivores

Snorkeling TourWhen first born, green sea turtles are omnivorous and eat a variety of sea life, including jellyfish, sponges, worms, and seaweed. Once they reach adulthood, they become almost exclusively herbivores and subsist on seagrasses and algae. This diet gives their skin its green color. Since they often swim in shallow waters to feed, you’ll likely encounter them when you embark on a snorkeling tour.

3. They’re Known as “Honu” in Hawaii

In Hawaii, green sea turtles are referred to as honu. These ancient creatures, which have lived in the oceans for over 150 million years, are respected and beloved by Hawaiians. Legend has it that green sea turtles led the first Polynesians to Hawaii, so they symbolize navigators finding their way home.
