Even with professional tutoring and extra help from teachers, your child’s test scores might not reflect their actual knowledge. Many kids get nervous and flustered easily while taking tests, which can lead to simple mistakes that lower their results. To keep your child calm and focused so they ace their exams, follow the below advice.

How to Help Kids Alleviate Test-Day Jitters

1. Go Over the Approach to Test Taking

To combat stress, go through the process of how your child should approach the test. They should know to read the directions carefully and ask the teacher to clear up any confusion. From there, they can comb through the exam and answer the easier questions first, leaving plenty of time to concentrate on the difficult sections. They should know to separate wordy problems into smaller pieces, which will make it easier to process the information and reach the right conclusions. Feeling prepared will help set your child’s fears aside.

2. Teach Relaxation Techniques

tutoringIt’s normal for your child’s heart to start pounding and their mind to start racing as soon as they get the test, which makes it hard to focus on the task at hand. To help your child remain calm, teach them deep-breathing and meditation techniques to try right before the test. This will lower their heart rate to keep them relaxed.  You can also suggest they visualize a setting where they feel at ease.

3. Instill Confidence

A self-esteem boost could help your child overcome their test anxiety. Leading up to the test, review their homework and assignments from tutoring sessions. Go over the problems with errors, showing encouragement to help them reach the correct answers. You can also come up with a list of similar questions to use as a study guide, which will help build confidence in their abilities.
