It’s normal for children to get some jitters before a dental appointment. However, your child might have more severe dental anxiety if they resist going to the dentist or act fearful in the dental chair. Taking the following steps and working with your dentist will help your child feel more at ease.

3 Steps to Help Your Child Overcome Dental Anxiety

1. Talk to Your Dentist

When your dentist knows your child might arrive at the appointment feeling anxious, they can be extra gentle. They’ll communicate with your child and try to make them laugh, while allowing you to stay in the room. They can also give you ideas for soothing your child before and during cleanings.

2. Keep Your Child in the Loop

In the meantime, read cheerful children’s books about visits to the dentist, and allow them to ask questions. Be straightforward while framing the visit in a positive way.

3. Help Them Relax

Allow your child to bring comforting items, such as a stuffed animal or favorite toy, to the dental appointment. Your dentist might also allow your child to listen to music through headphones during the cleaning. Comforting gestures like holding your child’s hand during their appointment can also be helpful. If you have time in the waiting room, walking your child through a deep breathing exercise can encourage them to relax.
