5 Essential Ingredients in Toothpaste , Kerrville, Texas

As your dentist has likely told you during checkups, toothpaste is integral in the fight against cavities. For it to be most effective, however, it must contain certain ingredients. The following are a few features to look for when shopping for toothpaste.

What’s In My Toothpaste?

1. Fluoride

Fluoride fights cavities by strengthening tooth enamel, which is why you can find it in all toothpaste bearing the American Dental Association®’s Seal of Acceptance. Fluoride treatments are also given at the dentist’s office during routine checkups, and the mineral is commonly added to municipal water sources.

2. Glycerol

Moisture is necessary, so the paste can easily be squeezed from the tube time and time again. Glycerol is a type of humectant, which helps toothpaste retain moisture inside its packaging. Sorbitol is another type of humectant which also adds a sweet flavor.

3. Abrasives

dentistAbrasives give toothpaste its scrubbing ability, which helps remove surface stains. Common abrasives include silicates, calcium carbonate, phosphate salts, and magnesium carbonate. Abrasives also help polish the teeth, which creates a more pleasing smile.

4. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

If you’ve ever wondered where the bubbly foam comes from when brushing your teeth, the answer is sodium lauryl sulfate. As a type of detergent, this substance creates a similar effect as shampoo and certain types of soap. Sodium lauryl sulfate can sometimes irritate the mouth, so some brands of toothpaste don’t have this ingredient.

5. Flavoring

Flavoring makes toothpaste more palatable when brushing, as its other ingredients don’t usually add any flavor. Along with sorbitol, saccharine is commonly added to toothpaste to make it taste sweeter. Children’s brands tend to include more obvious flavors to entice kids to brush their teeth, such as fruit or bubblegum. Sugar is never added to toothpaste as a flavor enhancer, as it would be counterproductive to dental care.
