When you buy jeans, you probably select your favorite color out of the available choices. If you’re a fan of dark wash or black denim, follow these laundry tips to keep that deep color from fading.

How to Make Sure Your Denim Doesn’t Fade In the Laundry

1. Pre-Soak

For dark or black jeans, turn them inside out before pre-soaking in cold water with one cup of white vinegar and a tablespoon of salt. Keep your clothes in for at least an hour to set the dye. If you don’t want to use vinegar, look for a dye fixative such as Rit, which is available at hobby stores. You only need to do this with brand new jeans.

2. Wash Gently

laundry-tipsIf you want the denim to retain its original color, wash the jeans in cold water with a cold rinse on a gentle cycle. Turn them inside out and wash with other denim clothes so the whole load gets a color boost if any dye escapes. Avoid using tumble dryers since the heat will fade fabrics. Sunlight will fade them as well, so the best strategy is to use a drying rack inside.

3. Go Longer Between Washings

There’s no need to wash jeans every time you wear them. They get more comfortable as the material relaxes, so use spot treatment with dish soap, cornstarch, or even Pine-sol for minor stains. Another laundry tip is to spritz the jeans with a mix of vodka and water and then freeze them to eradicate odors and bacteria.
