A dental bridge is an option to replace one or more lost teeth. Like a partial denture, this is a small row of teeth that fits into the gap. Unlike dentures, which include false gum tissue at the bottom, bridges are made to replace only the teeth. There are several different types of dental bridges, and they’re attached in different ways.

What Types of Dental Bridges Are There?

1. Implant-Supported

Instead of relying on the remaining teeth, a dental implant can replace the root of a missing tooth. This type of bridge doesn't require alterations to the surrounding teeth and has the benefit of stimulating the gum and jawbone in the gap as if the original tooth was still there. One dental implant can support a row of pontics.

2. Traditional

Dental BridgeIn a traditional bridge, the pontics, or artificial teeth, are held in place by dental crowns that fit over the teeth on both sides of the gap in your mouth. The teeth are slightly sanded down to allow the caps to fit over them, and the bridge is cemented in place.

3. Cantilever

This type of dental bridge is similar to a traditional one, but it only attaches to one tooth next to the gap. You can use this type of bridge to replace rear molars or treat a smile that has few natural teeth left. It's also useful if the remaining teeth are weakened.

4. Maryland

Like a traditional bridge, this variety relies on the teeth next to the gap. However, it doesn't use dental crowns to completely cover those teeth. Instead, your dentist will cement metal or porcelain attachments to the backs of the supporting teeth to hold the pontics. This means there aren’t any visible changes to those teeth when you smile.
