As the winter weather approaches, it’s important to ensure your home is up to challenge. Your roof will take most of the pressure from falling leaves, snow, and ice, so it’s best to sort out any repair needs before the season arrives. Use the following tips to inspect and prepare your home for incoming inclement weather.

How to Prepare Your Roof for the Winter

1. Look for Exterior Damage

Begin with a visual inspection of your roof’s exterior. Before the snow starts to fall, you’ll have a much clearer view of flaws such as missing, cracked, or curling shingles. These should be replaced before snowfall has a chance to turn them into leaks.

Also, use binoculars to look for torn flashing at the base of your chimney, around skylights, and along any other roofing seams. This thin metal layer provides protection against the elements, and any loose connections could lead to moisture infiltration.

roofing2. Check the Attic

Next, head inside your home and up into the attic with a flashlight. If you spot puddles on the floor or soggy insulation, it’s important to call for repairs immediately. Otherwise, this moisture could prevent the insulation from trapping heat inside your home, or harbor mold and mildew. Insulation damage is also evidence that there’s a leak in your roofing.

3. Clean off Debris

In the weeks leading up to the winter, make an effort to clear any organic debris accumulated on your roof and gutters. This includes leaves, twigs, dirt, and nests.

If these items are left there, they could cause fungal growth that curls your shingles. If debris form blockages in the drainage system, they could also cause rainwater to pool, leading to the formation of ice dams and shingle damage.
