No matter how diligent you are about caring for your tires and keeping them inflated, every vehicle needs tire repair or replacement eventually. Many factors affect a tire’s ability to hold air, and some of them are out of your control. Below, learn about what causes tires to lose air and how to know when it’s time to get new tires.

Factors That Cause Tires to Lose Air

Because of the structure of rubber, tires have tiny openings that allow air to escape over time, even when your vehicle is not on the road. This process is called permeation. Outside temperatures can affect the rate at which permeation occurs, so it’s important to pay special attention to your tire pressure as the weather heats up and cools down. Tire inflation tends to increase as temperatures drop and increase as temperatures rise.

Some tire air loss can be dramatic, such as when an explosion occurs due to overinflation, but it usually happens gradually. A tire puncture can cause a slow leak even if the puncturing item, such as a nail, is plugging the hole. These punctures require tire repair or replacement. Faulty air valves may not retain air the way they should, allowing it to escape from the tire.

Signs You Need New Tires

Rochester tire repairEventually, your tires may lose their ability to hold air and will need to be replaced. If they are bald or worn down to the wear bar, they don’t have enough tread to be safe, and it’s time to get new ones. Tires that have been damaged could blow out, and driving on a spare or getting repeated tire repairs is not a permanent solution. Over time, tires can wear unevenly, and rotating them may no longer smooth out your ride, so you will need to replace them. If you live in an area with snowy winters, make sure you swap out your regular tires for snow tires before the cold weather arrives.
