It’s never fun to realize that a crime has been perpetrated against you or your property, but recognizing it is the first step to dealing with the aftermath. To prepare yourself, learn the possible signs of a break-in at your home or business. Here’s how to tell if a lock has been tampered with and when it’s time to call a locksmith.

3 Signs Someone Has Tampered With a Lock

1. Lock Malfunction

An older lock may become sticky over time, requiring users to fiddle with the key. However, if you notice that a key suddenly doesn’t fit or turn well, it may be a sign that burglars have attempted to damage the lock. A common tactic uses a hammer and other tools to smash the protruding part of a lock, called snapping. Another technique, called bumping, uses a similar key that fits inside, which the burglar then hits with a tool to make the cylinders turn. Call a locksmith to change the lock if the key doesn’t work, or if the lock is difficult to turn.

2. Scratcheslocksmith

Deep cuts or scrapes along the keyhole may indicate that someone has tried to pick the lock. Tools like dental implements used for lock-picking can easily nick the surface of the metal. These tools leave finer marks than a key would. Because they catch and turn the lock cylinders, there is usually no actual damage to the lock itself or door. If you think the lock has been picked, consider installing a new one.

3. Damaged Lock or Door

Forcing a door, though not as easy as it looks in the movies, is not uncommon. The thief may kick or try to force the entire door open, which damages the frame and hinges. More often, an amateur burglar may drill through the deadbolt or use a crowbar to loosen or smash a lock so that it is useless. This type of damage is relatively obvious, and you should report it to local police or security. Then, engage a locksmith to change the lock.
