If you’re installing a septic system for your home, it’s important to understand your options. Most people know about the standard model consisting of a septic tank and drain field, but other configurations may be more suitable for your property. This depends on a few factors, such as water usage, general weather patterns, and soil and ground conditions in your area. Before committing to a system, consider these choices.

Which Septic System Is Right for You?

1. Septic Tank

In this traditional system, the septic tank is below the ground. As wastewater leaves your home, it separates into three layers. The topmost layer is scum, which consists of oils and fats. The bottom layer is solid matter, called sludge. The effluent is the central layer, which flows out of the system to the drain field. Here, it's treated and dispersed through the soil.

2. Mound System

Septic companies may install mound systems when the water table is particularly high, or soil conditions aren't right for a regular tank. For example, the soil might be too rocky to treat the effluent properly.

The mound for this system is formed with sand and built with a trench. As the waste flows from the septic tank, it moves to a separate pump. That device discharges small amounts of effluent into the trench, where it's treated in the sand and then dispersed to the surrounding soil. Since the mound takes up considerable space, you must have land to spare for this system.

3. Chamber System

A chamber system is known as a low-pressure dose product, or one where a standard installation wouldn't work efficiently due to poor terrain conditions or uneven ground. In this system, the pumping chamber is adjacent to the tank. During operation, the pump ejects wastewater from the chamber into the drain field, where it travels through a series of perforated pipes before dispersal.
