Most vehicles require battery replacement at some point because they only tend to last for about three to five years. However, you should have yours replaced during a maintenance check at your local auto repair shop, rather than getting stranded on the road with no power. To get the most out of your battery and hopefully avoid being stranded before you have your car checked, keep these tips in mind.

How to Prolong the Life of Your Car’s Battery

1. Keep Accessories Off

When your car is completely off, your battery doesn’t have to expend any energy. When your engine is running, the battery recharges using the alternator in your vehicle. When only the lights or other accessories are on but not the engine, your battery quickly drains power. Always make sure that these items turn off when you exit the car and turn on your engine quickly once you get inside.

2. Clean the Battery

To prevent this, wipe off the top of the battery terminal periodically. Then scrub the connections using an old toothbrush and a baking soda and water mixture to get rid of corrosion.

3. Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Your battery has to work harder when you’re driving in the extreme hot or cold to get your car to a comfortable driving temperature. A single trip shouldn’t make a significant impact, but over time, it adds up. If you cannot avoid driving in extreme temperatures, perform periodic battery tests or bring your vehicle to a local auto repair shop for tests and tuneups. Doing so will catch any battery issues before you end up stranded on the side of the road.
