Insurance rates can skyrocket for drivers who have been in accidents or received multiple tickets. However, you do have options for bringing your rates down. New York’s Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) is designed to help drivers with points on their license to reduce their insurance rates by taking defensive driving courses from approved instructors. If you could benefit from removing some of those points from your record, here’s what you need to know.

Commonly Asked Questions About PIRP Defensive Driving Courses

How does PIRP work?

The idea behind PIRP is to reward drivers who are willing to learn defensive driving techniques, so they can be safer on the road going forward. Once you complete a course with an approved provider that meets state standards, up to four of the points on your license will be eliminated, but only for the purpose of calculating suspensions and insurance. It does not clear any incidents from your driving record.

What are the benefits?

defensive drivingTaking this class can help drivers reduce insurance rates subtract points for their driving records. Additionally, the courses provide valuable skills that can help you stay safe on the road and potentially avoid future issues. However, the course cannot be used to eliminate future tickets or points.

Where can I take a course?

New York State simply approves select private providers who have met the standards for teaching defensive driving. You can find a driving school in your area that offers PIRP programs to sign up, either in-person or online.

How long does the course take?

The state mandates that PIRP defensive driving courses must be at least six hours long. That can be completed either in-person or online, and you don’t have to take the entire course at once. Check with your driving school to find a schedule that works best for you.
