Hardscapes include anything from small stones to large fountains. These features require little maintenance and increase the value of your home. However, you don’t need a lot of space to utilize them. Consider a few of the following ways to incorporate hardscapes into your backyard that will make it feel larger.

5 Hardscape Design Tips to Utilize Backyard Space

1. Build Vertical

Creating different heights with hardscapes makes your backyard look larger. Add potted flowers up the edges of the stairs, or add trellises around the vegetable garden or seating area for upward growth and a little added privacy.

2. Use Lights

Line the perimeter of the yard or illuminate a pathway with lights to give the illusion of depth. If you have a hardscape focal point, like a water fountain, place a few lights around it to direct people’s attention to it.

You may not have room for an entire pond, but a birdbath or small fountain will make the backyard a relaxing place. Many small water features can be placed directly on the grass or tucked in between the existing bushes or flowerbeds.

4. Avoid Fences

Boundaries make small spaces feel smaller, so avoid fences if you can. Instead, use objects as barriers. Put a bench at the edge of the property line, or plant a garden. If you need a fence for children or pets, aim to use a material like chain-link that you can still see through.

5. Install a Patio

Even a small patio can still fit a table and two chairs or a grill. Raise it up a few inches so it looks out over the yard, and line the steps leading down to it with lights.
