Like many homeowners, you’ll likely be powering off your air conditioning system as temperatures drop. Before you allow it to sit idle until next spring, it’s wise to handle some general maintenance needs. Staying on top of these will ensure it’s ready for the warmer seasons and that you won’t need unexpected air conditioning repairs.

Early Fall AC Checklist

1. Change Your Filters

Your air filters catch all the debris, dirt, and particles circulating in your home. Rather than letting these sit all fall and winter, swap them out. This is especially important if your heating system uses the same ductwork. Clogged air filters inhibit airflow. Your system will have to work harder to push warm air through, which will increase utility bills and strain on parts. Also, the filters get rid of pet dander and debris in the air, improving the air quality and preventing respiratory health issues.

2. Clean the Outdoor Unit

Wash these coils off with the hose. You should also trim back foliage, leaving a 3-foot clear space around the unit. This will keep plants from growing into the unit’s ventilation grate. Apply a cover to protect your unit from snow and ice, as well.

3. Schedule an Inspection

Nothing can replace a professional inspection, so call an air conditioning repair professional. They’ll look closely at all your system’s parts and identify signs of wear or future problems, such as refrigerant leaks and compressor issues. Addressing these before next spring will ensure you can turn your unit on without any issues.
