Asphalt, which is comprised of sand, aggregates, and petroleum-based cement, is available in a few different varieties. Categorized by their mixing process and temperature during use, each variety is ideal for certain conditions. Below, you’ll find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about hot mix asphalt, which is poured when it reaches between 300 and 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

FAQs About Hot Mix Asphalt

What is hot mix asphalt used for?

Because of its flexibility and durability, hot mix asphalt is primarily used on streets, highways, and interstates. It’s incredibly weather-resistant and water-repellent, which makes it the most expensive variety. However, municipalities usually deem it a worthwhile investment because it tends to last considerably longer than the warm mix and cold mix options.

Are there any limitations of hot mix asphalt?

asphaltBecause it cools down quickly, hot mix asphalt cannot travel over long distances. As such, it’s rarely used to pave rural areas that are well out of the way. It’s also a poor choice for winter projects as the temperature needs to be at least 40 degrees for optimal application. Typically, crews will use warm mix asphalt in such scenarios. Warm mix asphalt is poured between 200 and 250 degrees and cools down a lot more slowly.

Can you substitute hot mix asphalt with a cold mix to save money?

Although cold mix asphalt is the most affordable variety because it doesn't require any heat, it’s a poor choice for paving entire roads. It’s the least durable type of paving, so it’s only used for small projects, like repairing cracks, gaps, and potholes. In other words, it’s not a viable substitute for hot mix asphalt.

How do you maintain hot mix asphalt?

To maintain your new driveway, parking lot, or roadway, apply a seal no more than three years after installation. Depending on how much wear and tear the area gets, reapply the sealant every two to three years thereafter to protect it from UV rays, gasoline, heavy traffic, and the elements. You should also check for cracks periodically so you can have them filled promptly. This will prevent moisture from seeping under the pavement and threatening its structural integrity.
