Hearing loss may happen so gradually that you don’t notice you need hearing aids—medical devices worn behind the ear or in the ear to improve hearing. Here are four signs you may need help distinguishing sounds or hearing with greater clarity.

4 Indications You Need a Hearing Aid

1. Trouble With Electronic Audio

If you don’t notice your television or radio is too loud, your neighbors may let you know by complaining about the noise. Also, when you talk on the phone, if you don’t hear what the person on the other end of the line is saying, you may have hearing loss.

2. Continually Mishearing

You may need your hearing amplified if you frequently misunderstand what people are saying or if words seem unclear, garbled, or confusing. If you often ask speakers to repeat themselves, you should schedule a hearing test.

3. Conversations Are Exhausting

If you become tired and annoyed with conversations, whether conversing one-on-one or in a group, because you can’t follow the discussion, see an audiologist. Perhaps you get headaches from straining to hear a voice. If you can’t sufficiently tune out background noise to focus on a speaker, you may need a hearing aid.

4. You Have Tinnitus

Defined as a persistent ringing in the ears, tinnitus doesn’t always mean  you need a device to amplify sound. Ringing or roaring may stem from other problems. However, if you’re experiencing any other symptoms in addition to tinnitus, see an audiologist.
