Teens and new drivers are often the most expensive to insure because they are typically at the greatest risk of an accident. However, you can minimize your risk, protect yourself and your passengers, and avoid expensive repairs and lawyer fees by practicing some basic vehicle safety measures behind the wheel. Below are the do’s and don'ts of defensive driving.

Do:

Leave plenty of room.

As any lawyer will attest, you'll almost always be found at fault if you rear-end someone who stops suddenly. Leave at least three car lengths between you and the vehicle in front of you. Try to do the same for cars behind you. If someone is tailing too closely, slow down and move over to let them pass.

Buckle up.

lawyerYou should wear your seat belt when operating a vehicle and insist that your passengers do the same. It is an easy and effective way to prevent serious injury if you are ever in a collision. Over half of all teens and adults who died in vehicle crashes in 2016 were not wearing seat belts.

Don't:

Drive while distracted or impaired.

Never drive after drinking or using drugs. It's not only illegal, but it is exceptionally dangerous. Also, never use a mobile device while operating a vehicle. This includes map apps, texting, browsing the Internet, and making phone calls.

Lurk in someone's blind spot.

Avoid driving to the left or right of another vehicle with your front end close to their rear bumper. This is a dangerous position to be in because most drivers cannot see you there in either their side-view or rear-view mirrors. If they change lanes suddenly without looking for you, they could cut you off and cause you to swerve off the road.
