When you’re starting a kitchen remodeling project, the many decisions you need to make can be a bit overwhelming. From the lighting to the backsplashes and counters, each decision should factor in both practical and aesthetic aspects. If you’re choosing the type of sink you want for the space, you’ll have two main options. Here’s a guide that explains how they differ to help you make the right decision for your home.

Drop-In Kitchen Sinks

Also known as a top-mount or self-rimming sink, this classic option features a “lip” around the perimeter that connects it to the counters. It is affordable and relatively easy for kitchen remodeling contractors to install. Since it features a rim, a contractor can install it on virtually any countertop, including granite, laminate, and marble. Drop-in sinks are especially beneficial for marble countertops, since they help protect the edges. They also come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes, allowing you to match the theme of your kitchen.

During the installation, your contractor will fill the gap between the rim and the countertop to prevent food and water accumulation. The sink will need periodic recaulking to maintain this seal.

Undermount Kitchen Sinks

kitchen remodelingUndermount kitchen sinks are installed under the countertops and therefore do not feature visible rims. Their weight requires heavy-duty countertop materials. Tile, wood, and laminate cannot support them. Since undermount models are edge-free, you cannot fill them completely with water, which could spill liquids and loosen adhesives.

These sinks work well in smaller kitchens because they save counter space. They also make it easy to clean your counters, since you could use a squeegee or cloth to wipe spills and debris directly into them. These also tend to be lower maintenance, since they don’t require caulking and don’t accumulate dirt around the rims.
