Confrontation is a constant in life, both in personal and professional relationships. While few people genuinely enjoy engaging in confrontation, knowing how to approach contentious issues will allow you to make your voice heard, while also respecting others. Having courageous conversations can be extremely satisfying emotionally, and resolve issues pragmatically and respectfully.  When it comes to major conflicts between loved ones, counseling may be necessary to navigate more difficult issues.

How Can You Improve Confrontational Interactions With Others?

1. Acknowledge Feelings

People spend far too much time trying to suppress their feelings. The problem with this is that bad feelings rarely disappear; they just usually manifest in some other way. While it can be uncomfortable, be honest about the way you’re feeling in the moment, and acknowledge how the other person is feeling. When you start from a place of honesty, you have a better chance of working through the issues.

2. Practice Active Listening

counselingMany people in counseling are encouraged to practice active listening. Instead of focusing on what you intend to say next, be patient and attentive to the other person’s statements. Also, use verbal and nonverbal cues to indicate your attention. If you’re unsure about something that was said, respectfully request clarification before making any judgments. Active listening ensures you have the full picture, while also making the other person feel respected.

3. Remain Assertive About Your Needs

Being assertive is not the same as being aggressive. When you’re assertive, you remain respectful but act as an advocate for your thoughts and feelings. Focus on solving the problem at hand instead of being right or placing blame. If you can’t seem to reach a consensus, agree to disagree on the issue, but maintain a kind and respectful nature.
