With smartphone apps and television streaming services catering to kids, many youngsters never crack open books outside of the classroom. However, language arts and vocabulary skills play a significant role in later grades, making reading an essential part of childhood development. To encourage your child to become a bookworm, follow these reading enrichment suggestions.

How to Transform Your Child Into an Avid Reader

1. Arrange a Reading Nook

When your child's reading area is free of distractions, they'll quickly become more engaged in a story. To make them more comfortable, set up a reading nook in a quiet area of the house. You can put a comfy chair in the space with a table lamp to help them stay focused. You can also include them in the design process to ensure you're creating a space they'll want to spend time in.

2. Take Regular Trips to the Library

Look on your library's website for a list of upcoming events. Based on your child's interests and age, a librarian can also put together a reading list of books to keep them entertained at home.

3. Make Reading Part of the Routine

Many kids find comfort in the familiar, so make reading a part of your little one's everyday life. When you tuck them in at night, end the day with a bedtime story. You can read a passage or chapter each night until the tale is complete. If they don't want to wait to find out what happens, encourage your youngster to read ahead and share a recap with you.
