Whether you’re moving across town or the country, you’re probably worried most about your fragile belongings. Fine china, family heirlooms, and crystal glasses are all susceptible to breakage if they’re packed or handled poorly. To ensure that everything makes it to your new home in one piece, follow the tips below.

How to Move Delicate Objects Safely

1. Appropriate Supplies

You might be tempted to grab the nearest newspaper and use it to wrap glasses and plates. However, investing a little more in packing supplies will provide the maximum protection for your belongings. Before you start packing, make sure you have bubble wrap, packing tape and paper, and sturdy boxes. Then use the techniques below to keep your belongings safe.

2. Wrap Items Carefullymoving

To pack plates, wrap each plate with bubble wrap and tape it in place. Then stack them vertically in the box, and fill any empty corners with packing paper. Glasses should be wrapped with packing paper and filled with crumpled paper. You should wrap collectible figurines in several layers of bubble wrap and packing paper, and carefully place them where they won’t shift and be at risk of snapping.

3. Pack the Box Well

Boxes will likely end up stacked during the moving process, so make sure you leave an inch of space at the top of the box and fill it with wadded-up packing paper. That way, if a heavy box is on top of a box with fragile items, the pressure won’t crack objects at the top. If there are any gaps in the box, fill them with packing paper as well to prevent shifting during the move. Then clearly label each box as “FRAGILE,” so your movers know to use extra caution.
