Termites can cost you thousands of dollars in property damage if left unchecked. These insects thrive on food sources around your property, including the wood in your walls, and you usually don’t discover their presence until it’s too late. To help you proactively deal with these pests, here’s what you should and shouldn’t do when it comes to prevention.

Do:

Maintain the landscaping.

Clear dead wood, lumber, and cellulose products surrounding your house because these are irresistible foods to termites. Don’t forget to remove roots and stumps as these can invite pests and undermine the beauty of your yard.

Eliminate entry points.

termitesThese bugs can enter your home through small crevices, cracks, and joints. Seal holes around your windows and doors as these are possible entry points. You can also install bug screens on your foundation and attic vents or apply paint on wood to seal cracks. Remember that termites can even fit through gaps around gas and water lines, so secure these, too.

Don’t:

Leave branches hanging over your roof.

Termites can use overhanging tree limbs as entryways to your home. Regularly trim the hedges, leaving at least 12 inches of space between it and your home’s exterior.

Allow water to accumulate.

Since termites need water to survive, make sure there isn’t any excess liquid around your home. Fix leaks from faucets, AC units, and water pipes, and ensure that downspouts are facing away from the house. Mulch can serve as a source of termite nutrients, so keep it at least four inches away from the home. Also, keep the mulch less than two inches high to prevent moisture accumulation.
