Often, when people begin having children, they find themselves calling the plumber more frequently than they used to. That’s because many kids don’t know how to prevent plumbing mishaps. To help you keep your home disaster-free, here are a few important rules you should teach your child about plumbing.

3 Plumbing Rules to Teach Your Child

1. Always Flush

When your children are young, remind them to always flush after using the toilet and check that the water doesn’t rise after they flush. Have them immediately alert you if the water does rise, and if they’re older, teach them how to unclog the toilet with a plunger.

2. Don’t Waste Water

plumberEncourage your kids to save water by turning off the faucet when they’re not using it. Whether they’re brushing their teeth, washing their hands, or doing the dishes, they shouldn’t turn the water on until they need to rinse. Demonstrate the importance of this rule by always following it yourself, as children tend to imitate their guardians.

3. Watch What You Rinse Down the Drains

Teach your children what they should and shouldn’t flush or rinse down the drain. Remind them to only flush human waste and toilet paper; they should never flush any other items, including toys; diapers; hair; cotton swabs; wipes, even those labeled flushable; and dental floss.
