Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent diseases to affect women. That’s why National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, held annually in October, was created in 1985 to raise awareness, help those in need, and share the importance of scheduling regular mammograms through your gynecologist. Here’s a breakdown of the exams that screen for breast cancer to help you catch symptoms early for more effective treatment.

Why Self-Exams Are So Important

Fairfield, OH gynecologistConducting monthly self-exams will help you recognize changes in size, color, or shape, as well as any other abnormalities that might be present.

After performing a visual inspection, raise your arms and check again for anything unusual, such as puckering or dimpling of the skin, rashes, or fluid from the nipples. Then lie down and place your right hand on the left breast, using your fingers to firmly press down in a circular motion. Go from the top to the bottom, and check both sides, from the armpit to between your breasts. Then perform this step while standing up. Do the same for the other breast. If you notice a lump, or anything that feels unusual, contact your gynecologist promptly.

Mammograms & Other Diagnostics

There are several recommended screening tests for breast cancer. A mammogram, which is a kind of X-ray, provides practitioners with a clear picture of your breast tissue to help them find lumps before you feel them.

The test can also show calcifications, or small clusters of calcium. These types of abnormalities aren’t always related to cancer; they might be caused by cysts or fatty cells. In these cases, the doctor may order a repeat mammogram or perform an ultrasound for a closer look.

Those with a family history of breast cancer or who have BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations are considered high-risk individuals. Doctors may elect to perform breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) along with the mammogram on people who are more likely to get breast cancer. Finally, your gynecologist may also perform a clinical manual exam during your annual visit.
