When the check engine light turns on, the cause of the issue isn’t always certain. The light could be triggered by a poorly tightened gas cap, or it may indicate a serious engine problem that requires towing. While you may need an analysis by a mechanic to determine the specific issue, you can conduct some simple troubleshooting yourself to know whether it’s safe to continue driving.

Common Check Engine Light Causes

1. Loose Gas Cap

A loose gas cap is one of the most common triggers of the check engine light. Fortunately, it’s easy to fix. Check whether your cap has been screwed on as tightly as recommended. It may also not tighten right if you didn’t align the threads on the cap before screwing it on. Take it off and re-tighten it. If the cap is cracked, you need to buy a replacement. Note that the light won’t turn off immediately; it may take a few miles or a few trips in your car before it’s extinguished.

2. Overheating Engine

towingAn overheating engine could be the result of a variety of problems, but it’s always a serious issue. Check your engine temperature gauge to see whether it’s overheating. If the temperature dangerously high, don’t try opening the hood yourself, as this could result in injury. Turn off the engine and call a towing service.

3. Failing Mass Airflow Sensor

The mass airflow sensor controls the amount of fuel based on the air coming through the engine. When it fails, your gas mileage will decrease, and the car may stall. This may be the problem if you haven’t replaced your air filter in the past year. It’s safe to continue driving for now, but you should take your car to an auto repair professional for a new sensor and filter within a few days.
