A forklift rental takes the hard work out of moving large and heavy objects. Though they’re easy to operate and make quick work of big tasks, they can still be dangerous if mishandled. Even though only licensed and trained individuals can operate forklifts, mistakes and lapses in judgment happen. Here are 3 of the most common forklift operator errors and how you can avoid them.

3 Forklift Operating Errors

1. Not Securing the LoadForklift Rental

Even if the distance you’re moving the load to is short, it only takes a slight jostle for things to shift and fall. Some items are more prone to staying in place, such as pallets, but other items that are oddly or asymmetrically shaped can easily topple over. Take the time to secure each load before you move the forklift.

2. Miscommunication

Whether you’re operating a forklift in a busy warehouse or in a less crowded area, communication is imperative. If you have several people working in the same space, they may be too busy to notice you. If you’re transporting a large load, you may not see or have time to react if they step in front of you. Establish your working area and make sure everyone knows to stay out of the way.

3. Ignoring the Load Capacity

One of the first things you need to look at before you operate your forklift rental is the load capacity. There will be a plate on the forklift that indicates the maximum weight capacity. Failure to heed this can result in dangerous situations. This can cause the forklift to tip up, putting everyone and everything from the operator, to the load, to the people nearby in danger.
