When driving, gravel and other road debris can become airborne and hit the windshield. Even if damage is minimal, a hairline crack or small chip can create plenty of problems down the line. Here are a few common concerns cracks and chips cause and why you should call a full-service auto shop for windshield repairs.

Why You Shouldn’t Ignore a Windshield Chip or Crack

1. Damage Could Spread

When it rains or snows, for example, moisture can get inside the fracture and cause it to grow with free-thaw cycles. Thermal stress from temperature fluctuations can also cause a small crack to splinter. When this happens, technicians at a full-service auto shop will have no choice but to replace the windshield. By addressing the damage as soon as possible, they might be able to salvage the current installation.

2. Ability to Drive Safely Is Compromised

A crack or chip makes it impossible to see clearly out of the windshield. Light could catch the fractured glass, creating a blinding glare. Water inside the crack can also make the glass cloudy, creating blind spots. As windshield damage compromises the safety of everyone on the road, you could get a traffic ticket for driving with a crack.

3. The Roof Could Collapse

When a chip is left to grow into a crack or the break spreads, the entire windshield becomes weaker. The slightest tap or jostle could cause the entire panel to shatter. This could happen while you’re driving, putting the safety of everyone in the car in jeopardy. The windshield supports the weight of the roof. When it shatters, the top of the car could cave in.
