Dental bone grafting is a minor surgical procedure in which a small piece of dental tissue is removed and transplanted to an area of the jaw where bone loss has occurred. This can develop over time from untreated periodontal disease, but replacing the bone allows dentists to perform restorations. Find out what to expect from dental bone grafting and why it’s done below.

Why Is It Performed?

If you have one or more missing teeth, your dentist may have recommended a permanent restoration, such as dental implants. These implants consist of a titanium rod with a crown, or fake tooth, attached on top. This prosthetic is then affixed to the jawbone to take the place of the removed tooth.

While implants are among the most effective treatments available, they require ample bone tissue to be performed. For patients whose bone has worn away due to periodontitis, replacing the missing tissue with this dental graft can allow new bone to grow. This will then provide a stable support system for an implant.

What Does the Procedure Entail?

Bone grafts can be performed in several ways. In most cases, a dentist will source the donor bone tissue from the patient themselves, often taking it from an area such as the far recesses of the jaw or the hip bone. In other cases, another donor may provide bone, or a synthetic material may be used. The procedure is typically performed in-office under local anesthesia.

What Happens Afterwards?

dentistAfter the procedure is performed, you may experience slight discomfort, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications. Over a period of several months, the body will replace the graft by generating its own new bone, thereby reversing the declining bone in the affected area. You’ll continue to follow up with your dentist, and once the bone tissue has developed enough, the dentist can surgically insert the implant to provide you with a natural-looking and comfortable restoration.
