As a pharmacy, it’s essential to keep everything is running as smoothly as possible because your machinery helps prepare and distribute medications. Medicines like vaccines have to be kept in a laboratory freezer to maintain the correct composition. To ensure the drugs kept in the storage unit meet the right specifications, it needs to go through proper maintenance practices.

How to Maintain Your Laboratory Freezer

1. Check the Freezer Door

The door creates a seal that keeps the cold air inside and the medications fresh. If you notice the interior temperature isn’t as cold as it should be, there is likely a problem with the seal. The door handle might also be loose or stuck, which would prevent you from getting inside. If you notice either of these issues, have them repaired as soon as possible.

2. Check for Frost Buildup

Due to the nature of these machines, it’s relatively common that some extra ice can build up on and in the machine where everything is stored. Brush off any excess ice that you see inside the machine and in the release port. By keeping the ice at a reasonable level, the freezer will continue to work well, and all of the samples can be organized clearly.

3. Maintain Proper Cleaning

The interior of the freezer has to be just as clean as the outside. Once a month, remove everything from inside the freezer and wash it with warm water and baking soda. This will remove any chemicals that might have spilled out or been causing odors, helping you avoid cross-contamination. The outside should also be wiped down daily with a commercial-grade glass cleaner to clean off any dirt or germs.
