Acupuncture, a facet of Traditional Chinese Medicine, uses tiny needles to stimulate acupressure points all over the body. These points control how Qi, or energy flow, moves throughout the body via pathways called meridians. Although this healing technique has been around for 3,000 years, there are still some myths surrounding it. Here's what you need to know to correct these misperceptions and determine whether it's right for you.

What Are Some of the Myths About Acupuncture?

1. It Hurts

While acupuncture needles can produce mild tingling sensations, dull aches, numbness, and heavy feelings, it is not painful. You can expect a painless experience because the needles are about the width of a human hair, and therefore much smaller than their hypodermic counterparts. Acupuncture needles are also flexible to minimize discomfort. Most patients feel relaxed as the needles unblock Qi and release tension in their bodies. Many even fall asleep during the procedure.

2. It’s a Placebo Effect

acupuncture Numerous studies highlight the effectiveness of this ancient technique, including its ability to treat allergies, depression, nausea, hypertension, headaches, IBS, muscle sprains, sciatica, and tennis elbow. Discuss your treatment goals with your acupuncturist while keeping in mind that the effects are not always immediate. Some people enjoy results following their first session, while others notice health benefits after two or three sessions.

3. It Interferes With Medical Treatments & Physical Therapy

This form of Traditional Chinese Medicine generally has no negative impact on physical therapy, assorted medications, or any other form of Western medicine. However, you shouldn’t schedule the treatment if you take blood-thinning medication or have a bleeding disorder. Also, avoid electroacupuncture if you have a cardiovascular pacemaker.

4. It Is Addicting

Acupuncture treatment is not addictive. In fact, it can actually help those with various dependencies. If you want to quit smoking cigarettes, for example, you can schedule acupuncture to aid in stopping your use of tobacco completely. Many people smoke and drink due to increased stress. Acupuncture relieves stress and reduces tension to further help those with triggers.
