Fostering a child is a wonderful way to add to your family while giving someone in need a loving home. In some instances, you may be interested in making your fostered son or daughter a permanent part of your family through adoption. Speak with a family lawyer and review the facts on adopting through foster care in Georgia.

A Foster Parent’s Guide to Adopting in Georgia

What is foster-to-adopt?

In many cases, foster children only stay with their foster families temporarily. While most do return to their biological families, some are ultimately put up for adoption. Foster-to-adopt placements refer to those instances when a foster family has expressed that they would be prepared to adopt.

How does the process work?

family lawyerA foster child can only become available for adoption if their biological parents have surrendered their parental rights. Alternatively, their rights may be terminated by the court. In either case, the foster parents are then given priority if they want to adopt the child.

Do you have to wait for the child's parental rights to be terminated?

If you specifically enter a foster-to-adopt placement agreement, you do have to wait for the parental rights to be terminated before you can adopt. If you're anxious about the uncertainty that this arrangement brings, you can instead adopt directly out of foster care. The system has many children whose parents have already given up their rights.

What are the requirements for adoption?

To adopt, you must be at least 10 years older than the child, and you must be at least 25 years old yourself. You must also complete a medical exam and background check, and provide proof of residence and financial stability. A family lawyer can advise you on the full requirements and paperwork needed.
