If you notice low water pressure in one fixture in your home, the problem is likely with that faucet or showerhead. However, if the pressure is low in more than one area, you may have a larger problem affecting your water supply. There are a number of steps you and your plumber can try to get the pressure back to normal, making it easier and more comfortable to use your sinks and showers. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Fix Your Water Pressure

1. The Valve

Your home's main water supply valve, also called the shut-off valve, allows you to control the total amount of water that flows into your house. If it's partly closed, you may not get as much water as you need to keep all the sinks and other fixtures fully supplied. Adjust the valve to make sure it's fully open; it can usually be found outside or in your basement.

2. Pressure Regulating Equipment

PlumberYour house may be equipped with a regulator, which is designed to protect your home from high water pressure. When it starts to wear out, the pressure will get lower and lower until it needs to be replaced. If the regulator is fine or you don't have one, and you still have these problems, you may not be getting high enough pressure from the main valve, so you’ll need to have a plumber install a water pressure booster tank.

3. Well-Maintained Pipes

If hard water and debris clog your pipes, they can slow the flow of water into the home. If there's a leak anywhere, most of your pressure will escape, and you'll also have damage in the house where the water spills out. To repair the issue and restore the pressure, have a plumber locate and fix the problem area.
