Heating systems keep indoors pleasantly warm, making them an essential feature of many homes. However, many homeowners don’t fully understand how the system works. The next time your heating contractor comes to your house, you can have a better understanding of the basics of your heating system with the following guide.

What Are Your Heating System's Main Components?

As most heating heating contractorcontractors will tell you, residential areas use different types of heating systems, such as furnaces, boilers, and heat pumps. These usually have two main components—the equipment itself and the distribution system. For example, in boiler-type heating systems, the steam produced from the device will travel through pipes to radiators and coils under the floor. On the other hand, forced hot air heaters rely on overhead ductwork to move and distribute warm air indoors.

How Does Your Furnace Work?

The furnace is the most commonly used heating system. It runs on fuel sources such as electricity or natural gas. This heating instrument has four main parts: the burner, blower, heat exchanger, and flue.

Heated air is produced when the fuel combusts in the burner. Once the temperature is high enough, the blower fan will introduce air into the heat exchanger. The air inside the heat exchanger is then heated to your desired temperature.

The blower then forces the warm air through a series of ducts. The blower fan's constant movement circulates and distributes the air to every room of your home. The flue then vents the toxic fumes and gaseous by-products of the combustion process outdoors.
