Nothing marks the start of autumn like using your fireplace for the first time. As you embrace the cooler weather with the warm and romantic glow of the flames, don’t forget to keep your fireplace clean and safe. Follow these fireplace and chimney maintenance tips for a season of efficient and enjoyable use.

Fireplace & Chimney Maintenance Guide

1. Schedule a Chimney Inspection

The National Fire Protection Association recommends having your fireplace and chimney inspected annually. Have it done before using your fireplace for the first time this season. During this service, the professional will look for signs of damage or creosote buildup on the chimney liner. Creosote is extremely flammable, so a stray spark from your fireplace could start a chimney fire if it’s not clean. If your chimney’s creosote buildup is noticeable enough, the professional will conduct a chimney cleaning.

2. Buy the Right Firewood

3. Sprinkle Coffee Grounds

If the ashes in your fireplace are often kicking up dust, sprinkle damp coffee grounds over them. This helps them cool while containing the dust.

4. Clean the Firebox & Hearth

At least 12 hours after your fire has extinguished, vacuum out the firebox and hearth area. Dust off the surrounding areas if any dust or ash has settled there.  This prevents a hazardous and unsightly buildup of soot. It also keeps the firebox empty so that plenty of oxygen can reach your firewood and keep it burning strong.
