Do:

Ask what forms of payment are accepted.

Make sure you know what types of payment you can use before bidding on an expensive item. Some estate auction organizers accept checks and charge cards, while others accept only cash. You don't want to win a bid only to find out too late that they won't take your check. 

Arrive early.

Some organizers limit the number of people in the home, and shoppers may take their time browsing through every room. If you arrive late in the day, you may find a long line. Also, by arriving early, you can get a look at everything on sale before it has been sold. This way, you won't miss out on a great opportunity.

Don't:

Expect organizers to help you load your purchase.

If you buy a heavy armoire, bedstead, or chest of drawers, it's best to have your own helpers with you. Organizers may not have staff on hand to load your purchase. They most likely won't deliver, and they may charge for handling if you need help moving the furniture.

Get carried away.

Many beginner estate auction attendees get so excited at the prospect of winning an auction that they forget that they must pay what they bid. Don't get swept up by feelings of competitiveness and bid more than you can reasonably afford. Only bid on items you know are worth the price and that you will use.
