Endometriosis is a term that describes the growth of tissue outside the uterus. It leads to a chronic inflammatory reaction that may cause pelvic pain and, in some cases, infertility. It’s estimated to affect one in 10 women during their reproductive years. All women should understand the signs of this condition and know how gynecologists treat it.

An Introduction to Endometriosis

Signs & Symptoms

Pain is the most common symptom of endometriosis. Women with endometriosis often have extremely painful menstrual cramps that worsen over time. Because the level of discomfort varies, many undiagnosed women ascribe their symptoms to menstrual cramping. Sufferers typically experience chronic lower back pain, pelvic pain, intestinal pain, and pain during or after sex.

How It’s Treated

Endometriosis can be diagnosed and treated by a gynecologist. They may perform pelvic exams, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or laparoscopy to diagnose the condition.

Hormonal birth control (the pill, shot, or an IUD) is a standard treatment for women who are not trying to get pregnant. Women who are trying to conceive are first treated with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) to suppress ovulation and control the growth of endometrial tissue. Once they stop taking the hormone, they may be able to get pregnant. If the symptoms warrant it, surgery may be done to remove scar tissue caused by the condition.
