Whether you’ve just had your first contact lens exam or you’ve been wearing contacts for a long time, it’s vital to take excellent care of them. To make sure you get the best possible use from your contact lenses, keep the following do’s and don’ts in mind.

Do:

Stay prepared and protected.

Wear masks or goggles if you go swimming. If your profession requires you to wear protective glasses, do so at all times. Make a habit of carrying a storage case, a spare pair of glasses, and a travel-size bottle of solution with you regularly. Put in your contact lenses before applying makeup. Select eye makeup that is waterproof, hypoallergenic, and free of oil and fragrances.

Prioritize cleanliness.

If they fall out, clean them again thoroughly before placing them back in. Wash your storage case with soap and water, and clean it thoroughly with a cloth or tissue at least once a week.

Don’t:

Wear your contact lenses all the time.

Avoid wearing your contact lenses when you’re sick, and absolutely do not wear them when you have an eye infection. In general, don’t keep your contact lenses in if your eyes are tired or itchy. They’ll dry out and hurt your eyes if you wear them while you’re sleeping, so keep them in their storage case at night.

Switch them around.

Even if your contact lens exam revealed that your eye prescription is the same for both eyes, it’s more sanitary to consistently put the same lens in the same eye after you’ve taken them out of their packages. Keep track of them by purchasing a storage case with an “R” and “L” label.
