Even though summer is over, there are still plenty of sunny days to enjoy. It’s worth taking advantage of the weather before the winter-cold hits, spending time with your elderly parent. Even though adult day care is an excellent solution to ensure they’re mentally stimulated on a daily basis, nothing beats bonding time with family outside in the fresh air. Here are a few activities you can both enjoy.

A Guide to Outdoor Activities to Enjoy With an Aging Parent

1. Farmers Markets

When elderly seniors socialize with people of many different ages, it’s engaging and stimulating for them. However, often they only spend time with people their age. A farmers market visit gives them an opportunity to socialize and connect with a community, especially when the harvest vegetables are in and the market is bustling. Plus, many seniors appreciate the opportunity to do their own shopping, an activity they may not get to do often anymore.

2. Outdoor Movies

adult daycareNights are getting a little colder now, but outdoor movies with blankets, lawn chairs, and hot chocolate are still worthwhile. Take them to a drive-thru to blend nostalgia and entertainment. However, be sure to bring plenty of layers, as they may have trouble with the cold.

3. Yoga or Tai Chi

If your parent goes to adult day care, they likely exercise daily. However, there’s nothing like a parent and child working out together. Yoga or Tai Chi in the park provides low-impact exercise that you can both enjoy. Look for classes that are designed specifically for seniors, and be cognizant of your parent’s physical limitations. Follow up with a cup of hot tea or a relaxing trip to a bookstore for a perfect Sunday afternoon.
