With the summer heat finally gone and winter on the horizon, fall is the perfect time to do some maintenance on your home’s HVAC system. To make sure your system is ready for the winter, follow these three HVAC contractor-approved tips.

3 Fall Maintenance Tips for Heating & Cooling Systems

1. Replace Old Air Filters

Air filters are designed to keep dust, dirt, and allergens from circulating through a home, but they may become overloaded with contaminants over time. Clogged filters reduce your system’s efficiency and diminish indoor air quality as well. HVAC contractors suggest replacing air filters in the fall and having air ducts cleaned for the same reasons.

2. Clean Vents and Registers

HVAC ContractorHVAC contractors also stress the importance of removing any buildup of contaminants from all the vents and registers inside the home. Contaminants that circulate through your home cause itchy eyes, runny noses, and respiratory issues. Take a moist washcloth and wipe down covers and inside each vent and register. To maximize system efficiency, reposition furniture and tie back any drapery that may block vents.

3. Inspect the Outdoor Unit

To operate at peak efficiency, an outdoor unit needs a steady flow of air. The airflow of a unit surrounded by debris is impeded. Remove weeds, fallen leaves, and any objects from the unit’s perimeter—at least two feet in every direction. Once the space around the unit is clear, clean the fins, using a container of compressed air to blow dust and dirt away. In addition, run a butter knife between each one to straighten them.
