With summer on the way out and the chilly temperatures filtering in, storing your lawn mower for the season is necessary for keeping it safe and functional. There are a few steps to take before placing your equipment in storage. Here are five tips to follow.

How to Store a Lawn Mower in Cold Weather

1. Drain the Fuel

Drain the gas tank or siphon it to be used for other equipment like a snow or leaf blower this fall and winter. Leaving gas in the tank may cause it to separate into components, which can lead to damage: there may be corrosion, or gunk may interfere with the carburetor. Disconnect and drain fuel lines too.

2. Clean the Mower

Remove any debris or dirt sitting in or on your equipment. Leaving it dirty can degrade and rust your lawn mower. With your garden hose, spray grass clippings off all surfaces, including the mower’s deck and blades. Keep your hands away from the blades and use the top hand grip to turn it on its side when cleaning. Finish by wiping the mower’s exterior with a clean, dry cloth.

3. Remove the Battery

4. Change the Oil

Fresh oil before storing for the winter keeps your engine in good shape and ensures that your lawn mower is ready to go when spring returns. Drain old oil first and add new oil based on the instructions in your owner’s manual, and replace the oil filter.

5. Cover the Mower

After you have cleaned the lawn mower and drained and replaced fluids, place it in a safe, dry area in your garage and cover it with a tarp. This will protect your equipment from dust, dirt, grime, and anything else that can build up.
