In readying your farm for winter, don't forget to include your pole barn in the preparations. A barn should be clean, safe, and secure to best meet the challenges of cooler temperatures and shorter days. Below are a few tips to help you winterize the space.

How to Prepare a Bole Barn for the Cold Season

1. Clean & Organize

A comprehensive fall cleaning will make the barn more efficient for winter. Declutter by getting rid of things you no longer need, such as trash, broken tools and equipment, and long-unused supplies and agricultural products, and organize all the remaining essentials.

Polish all surfaces, including worktables and shelves. Wash out stalls, hose down floors, and replace bedding. You’ll be able to more easily navigate an organized barn and find what during those shorter winter days.

2. Tend to the Gutters

Flush out the length of the gutters with a hose. Clean gutters are crucial to proper water flow in the event of a winter rainstorm and will help prevent leaks and structural damage to the barn.

3. Ventilate

During the winter, you're more apt to want to keep barn doors and windows closed to shut out cooler temperatures and keep the interior space warm and comfortable. However, fresh air circulation is essential to the health and safety of the people working inside the barn and the livestock that may live there. Windows don't need to be opened wide to allow for proper cross-ventilation; just a slight opening of windows on opposite-facing walls will help.
