It can be difficult to tell if you have a cockroach infestation at first. These pests are nocturnal and you probably won’t see many of the actual bugs. However, if you pay attention to the signs of a cockroach problem, you’ll be able to catch the issue earlier on and call an exterminator before it gets out of hand. Here are some of the common signs of an infestation in your home.

How to Tell If Your Home Is Infested With Roaches

1. Odor

exterminatorIf you notice an unusual or unpleasant lingering odor in certain parts of your home, you  may have a cockroach infestation. These nasty bugs emit a slightly oily and musky smell that becomes more noticeable as more roaches invade your home. If the smell becomes obvious, it’s likely that you have a large infestation and should call an exterminator as soon as possible.

2. Droppings

As roaches move throughout your home, they’ll leave droppings that typically look like coffee grounds. The droppings can also appear as brown smear marks on your walls and floors if the cockroaches have access to water. If you notice these brown or black droppings in your home, have an exterminator determine if you have an infestation.

3. Egg Casings or Shed Skins

When cockroaches lay eggs, they produce egg casings that are left behind after the eggs hatch. You may find one of these long, brownish casings still filled with unhatched eggs or a leftover one from a previous breeding cycle. As baby cockroaches grow, they shed their skins up to eight times before reaching their full size. You may also find these skins near their shelter.

4. Dead or Live Cockroaches

Roach corpses or live roaches are signs that are harder to miss. You may find the dead bugs under your large kitchen appliances or inside your cabinets. If you see live roaches during the day, this is a significant sign that you have an infestation and should call an exterminator immediately. These bugs are nocturnal and will only come out during the day if their nest is overcrowded.
