Popular countertop materials are sealed or manufactured to be stain-resistant. However, the kitchen can be messy, and blemishes can occur if you don’t clean them immediately or if you haven’t had the surface sealed on schedule. Fortunately, spot treatments can reduce the appearance of everyday imperfections.

A Stain Treatment Guide to 3 Common Countertop Materials

1. Granite

countertopThis material can usually be cleaned with warm soapy water, which will remove surface stains. However, deeper marks may require a tougher solution. Mix baking soda and water to create a paste and apply it liberally to the imperfection. Cover it with plastic wrap, and leave it overnight so that the baking soda can pull the oils from the stain. Wipe it away with a soft cloth, and rinse it with warm water.

2. Quartz

This is a highly stain-resistant material, and permanent blemishes will be rare. Routine cleaning can be done with mild soap and water. If there’s a persistent imperfection on your countertop, apply a glass cleaner with a soft cloth or the nonabrasive side of a sponge.

3. Stainless Steel

Despite its name, stainless steel can accumulate rust or hard water blemishes. A polisher, like Bar Keepers Friend®, should remove buildup from the surface. This formula is tough enough to remove stubborn minerals that have adhered to the steel while being gentle enough to prevent scratches on the surface. Scrub with the grain, and use a microfiber towel.
