Seasonal maintenance for your gas furnace ensures it’s ready for the colder months ahead. It doesn’t take much time, but the few minutes you spend showing your furnace a little TLC can pay off in dividends by averting unexpected issues and costly repairs later.

3 Gas Furnace Tips for Fall

1. Perform a Preliminary Inspection

Check the venting pipe to make sure it hasn’t come loose. Inspect the drainage tubes to ensure they’re secure as well. Take a quick whiff while you’re near the furnace. If you smell rotten eggs, it’s an indication of a gas leak.

You’ll need to call for an HVAC professional immediately. Don’t light your pilot light or turn your system on until a professional has inspected it. If there’s no indication of a gas leak, turn your system on to ensure the circuits are working and turn it back off again.

2. Change the Filter

As air circulates through the home and into the system, dirt, particulates, and allergens become trapped in the filter. Over time, this debris makes your system work harder than it needs to and puts a strain on your furnace. The filter should be changed out every two to three months.

3. Do Some Light Cleaning

Gas FurnaceClean the blower, located right next to the air filter, by removing the panels and wiping it down with a damp cloth. Replace the cover and look at your furnace ducts. Use the hose attachment of a vacuum cleaner or shop-vac to clear out any debris.

Clean the vent covers with a large brush and vacuum out the vents. One last item you’ll need to clean this fall is the flame sensor. If this gets dirty, it can cause your furnace to shut down. Unscrew the sensor and wipe it down with a soft, clean cloth.
